For decades, humans have been emitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and with this, temperatures on earth are rising exponentially. As a result, global warming is becoming an increasing issue of concern, with potential devastating implications for the world’s delicate ecosystems and its inhabitants. Although certain aspects of global warming may be beneficial in the short-term, looking longer-term its effects are overwhelmingly negative.
A major negative effect of global warming is the adverse consequences it has on many animal species. According to a recent study conducted by the World Wildlife Fund, rising temperatures are causing numerous species to migrate northwards in search of cooler climates. The warming climate affects the availability of resources species need forhabitat and food and this can have a domino effect, causing them to see declining or extinct populations in their existing habitats, as well as when they settle in their new habitats. In addition, the higher temperatures can cause disruption to the breeding and hatching cycles of many amphibians and reptiles, subsequently leading to a decrease in their populations. The warming of oceans is also a worry, as it can disrupt the life cycles of fish, shells and other aquatic species, making them more vulnerable to ecological disturbances, over-fishing and disease.
Furthermore, global warming can cause extreme climatic conditions such as severe droughts and an increased risk of flooding and hurricanes. For example, low-lying coastal regions are increasingly at risk of being inundated by rising sea levels, while extreme floods can cause damaged harbours, estuaries and coastal defences. In addition, these conditions can lead to immense loss of vegetation, crop production and livestock, leading to food insecurity in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries.
Not only does global warming have disastrous effects on the environment, but it can also have in significant economic consequences. Companies may employ fewer staff to reduce costs in light of extreme weather occurrences, such as floods, and those employed may have to contend with reduced profits due to crop failure and increased utility bills due to their reliance on air conditioning systems. Moreover, with the melting of glaciers, water supplies could be in short supply, ultimately leading to expensive water storage and transport costs, in order to obtain a safe source of drinking water.
In conclusion, global warming presents a number of serious dangers to both the environment and the global economy. With the increasing number of natural disasters and the destruction of habitats, the effects of global warming are sure to be felt for many decades to come. Therefore, it is vital for global leaders to implement sustainable energy initiatives, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and in turn, help reduce the damaging effects of global warming.
