In order to slow down global warming, individuals have to reduce their own contribution to emissions. This can be done by taking short and long-term steps. Long-term steps include the installation of renewable energy systems, such as solar or wind, in the house. These systems reduce the use of conventional, carbon-intensive energy thus reducing their contribution to emissions. Short-term steps include developing a routine for efficient usage of electricity, such as switching off all necessary appliances at the end of the day, and ensuring that the outside temperature is kept low to reduce the burden on air conditioning. Individuals should also reduce the use of fuel-guzzling vehicles and instead opt for eco-friendly alternatives such as electric cars.
The idea of living sustainably has been gaining traction as well. An efficient way to reduce one’s carbon footprint is by leading a sustainable lifestyle. Minimizing waste and reducing water and energy usage, enabling correct recycling and minimizing the use of transportation, are all factors which contribute to a greener environment. Additionally, so-called ‘zero waste’ entrepreneurship is on the rise and the triple bottom line of sustainability (economy, environment and society) is becoming more important for enterprises.
Individuals can also take part in programmes sponsored by their local governments or other NGOs by contributing to research and development of renewable energy. Such projects often involve exploring solutions to reduce global warming and discovering new ways to generate energy using natural sources. Not only do they involve contributing to the cause of global warming, they also open an educational opportunity to individuals to know more about clean energy and its importance.
However, personal initiatives cannot be enough to reduce the burden of global warming. Significant changes have to be made in the day-to-day operations of large businesses. Big companies have to stop their immoral and non-eco-friendly practices and switch over to the usage of renewable energy sources. Governments should implement laws to enforce and encourage companies to use renewable energy sources and implement sustainable practices, besides providing financial and tax relief.
In many cases, education can also be a great tool for mitigating the effects of global warming. Education about sustainable lifestyles and the impact of carbon-intensive practices can create an impact on the population’s behaviour, thus improving the available lifestyle choices and raising awareness about climate change.
It is essential that a collective effort is made by all members of the global community in order to address the issue of global warming. By taking the individual steps mentioned above and at the same time, expecting and supporting firms and governments to make changes, we can, together, make a difference. We must all act to preserve the planet for the generations to come and reduce the burden of global warming.
