Which Greenhouse Gases Contribute To Global Warming

In recent years, global warming has become an increasingly divisive and worrying issue to confront. As the climate continues to change over time, many have begun to worry about what sort of effect this will have on our planet and its inhabitants. Scientists have identified six of the most abundantly found greenhouse gases as being culpable for much of the global warming observed in recent decades. A further investigation is required in order to shift our focus to mitigating the effects they have on the environment, and to prevent the intensifying effects of global warming.

The six major greenhouse gases, according to the EPA, are Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Fluorinated Gases (HFCs, PFCs and SF6), Water Vapor and Ozone (O3). Carbon Dioxide, the most prevalent of these gases, is released through the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and natural processes like respiration and volcanic eruptions. Methane is released through landfills, livestock and other agricultural activities, and is considered far more potent than Carbon dioxide. Chemical production and the burning of fossil fuels are major sources of Nitrous oxide, and Fluorinated gases, often found in aerosols and refrigerants, can also contribute to global warming when released into the atmosphere. Water vapor and Ozone are both naturally occurring, but it is felt that their density can become so concentrated that they can trap in a lot of heat.

There are both positive and negative implications of the major greenhouse gases, particularly in regards to the environment. Carbon dioxide, for example, is required for photosynthesis, and its presence in the atmosphere is essential to life on earth. However, when too much is present, much of the energy from the sun is trapped as heat, and this effect is intensified by all the other greenhouse gases that can be found in the atmosphere. Methane is quickly broken down and removed from the atmosphere, but in its presence it is about 25 times more powerful than Carbon dioxide in trapping heat, meaning Methane is of particular importance when considering global warming.

Without measures taken in order to counterbalance the release of these gases, global warming will only continue to worsen. For example, actions to reduce deforestation, such as implementation of efficient and sustainable agricultural practices, or comprehensive reforestation and land rehabilitation programs, could significantly help to reduce the amount of Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Additionally, creating more renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal and substituting wasteful practices like open burning or landfill dumping with improved waste management would also help to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.

It is evident that reducing the emission of all of these greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is necessary in order to reverse the impact that global warming has on the environment. We must take steps now that will help us reduce emissions and move towards a more sustainable economy and environment. We must create a comprehensive system for monitoring and regulating these emissions, and educate the public on the effects that global warming can have on the planet and its inhabitants. This is the only way we can be sure to limit the amount of damage caused by global warming.
